The Hueneme Elementary School District is one of the oldest districts in the State, established in 1873, about 145 years ago. It has about 9,000 students at it's nine elementary schools and two junior high schools. The Hueneme District serves the communities of Port Hueneme and Oxnard, including unincorporated Silver Strand and Channel Islands Harbor neighborhoods.
Hueneme (pronounced Wy-nee'mee'') received it's name from the Chumash Indians meaning "resting place." It is the location where the Indians rested before they left for Anacapa Island 11 miles across the channel.
"Port" was added to the name of the city after a deep water Port was dredged in 1939. The residents were proud of this new feature and decided to honor it. The deep water Port at Hueneme is the only deep water port between Los Angeles and San Francisco. Today it is one of the top fifty exporting ports in the nation. In WW2 the port was new and it did not appear on any charts. More troops went to the Pacifac Theater from Port Hueneme than any other west coast port.

Port Hueneme is bordered on two sides by the city of Oxnard, on one side by the Naval Base, Ventura County, and by the Pacific Ocean.
