Bardsdale
    Location: Two miles south of Fillmore, The Thomas Guide Page: 465 -G4, ZIP code: 93015
    Origin of name: The community was named by Roys Gailard Surdam, who developed the tract in 1887 with help from Thomas R. Bard when it appeared construction of the railroad would end the area's isolation. Homes built in the 1870s and early '80s were destroyed by a flood in 1884.
Bell Canyon
    Location: Eight miles southeast of Simi Valley, The Thomas Guide Page: 529 -A5, ZIP code: 91307
    Although it is in Ventura County, the exclusive residential community can be reached only from Los Angeles County. When it was proposed for development, critics said urbanization should not be allowed because of the difficulty in getting Ventura County emergency services to the area.

    Community Services District: The closest thing to a local government for Bell Canyon is the Bell Canyon Community Services District, 30 Hackamore Lane, Suite 16, Bell Canyon 91307. Governed by a five-member board of directors, it can provide recreation programs, parks, water and sewer services, fire and police protection, street lighting and road maintenance.


Buckhorn
    Location: One mile southwest of Piru, The Thomas Guide Page: 457-C5, ZIP code: 93015
    Origin of name: Named for deer horns over the gate of Hugh Warring's ranch. It is often reported many antlers adorned the entrance and prominent buildings, but that is not so, according to the Ventura County Historical Society.


Cabrillo Village
    Location: East side of Ventura, The Thomas Guide Page: 493-A3, ZIP code: 93004
    Origin of name: Built in the 1930s by the Saticoy Lemon Association as farm-worker housing. The workers bought the property in the 1970s and formed a cooperative to run the community. Renamed Cabrillo after the property owner's surname.

    Municipal Advisory Council: Cabrillo Village is run by a board of directors, elected by the shareholders of the Cabrillo Improvement Association. The board has seven members. Casitas Springs
    Location: Seven miles north of Ventura, The Thomas Guide Page: 460-H3, ZIP code: 93001
    Origin of name: The Spanish word means huts or little houses and was given to the area because of the Indians' willow-thatched houses.

    Municipal Advisory Council: Casitas Springs is included under the Ojai Valley Municipal Advisory Council, which makes recommendations to the County Board of Supervisors and Planning Division of the Resource Management Agency. The council is composed of seven members from seven divisions but elected at large. The council meets monthly. The staff contact person is a member of the 1st District supervisor's staff.


El Rio
    Location: Just north of Oxnard, The Thomas Guide Page: 522 -J1, ZIP code: 93030
    Origin of name: The town was the fording place of the Santa Clara River and was founded by merchant Simon Cohn in 1875, although settlers had been in the area since 1868.

    Municipal Advisory Council: El Rio is included in the El Rio/Del Norte Municipal Advisory Council, which makes recommendations to the County Board of Supervisors, Planning Commission, Resource Management Agency, Local Agency Formation Commission and chief administrative officer. The council is composed of eight members appointed by the board upon recommendation of the 5th District supervisor. The council meets monthly. Faria Beach
    Location: Along the Rincon, north of Ventura, The Thomas Guide Page: 470-B3, ZIP code: 93001
    Origin of name: Named for the family of Manuel Faria, a native of the Azore Islands, who arrived in 1908.


Hollywood Beach
    Location: Just west of the Naval Construction Battalion Center, The Thomas Guide Page: 552-A3, ZIP code: 93035
    Origin of name: Named because Rudolph Valentino filmed "The Sheik" in the area. It was hoped it would become another movie colony. Silver Strand and Hollywood-by-the Sea were developed about the same time, with the names given for the same reason.

La Conchita Del Mar

    Origin of name: The name means small sea shell.


Lake Sherwood
    Location: Three miles south of Thousand Oaks, The Thomas Guide Page: 556-G7, ZIP code: 91316
    Origin of name: The lake is named for the extensive use of the area to film "Robin Hood" in 1922. In 1889, the lake was first called Canterbury Lake and then Lake Mathiessen, after F.W. Mathiessen Jr., who bought it in 1898.


Lockwood Valley
    Location: Six miles northwest of Frazier Mountain, The Thomas Guide Page: 367-A1


    Origin of name: The assumption is the valley was named after a person known only as Lockwood because of an 1873 report on placer mines "which were worked some two years ago by one Lockwood."


Meiners Oaks
    Location: West of Ojai on the Ventura River, The Thomas Guide Page: 441-D5, ZIP code: 93023
    Origin of name: The site was originally the ranch of John Meiners, which dated to the 1880s. In September 1925, Meiners Oaks Ranch was incorporated for subdividing, with Carl Meiners among the incorporators.

    Origin of name: Named for the first postmaster, Egbert Starr Newbury. "Park" was added because of the many trees in the area.

    Origin of name: O.T. Nye sold the land in lot form about 1930. For a time, it was called Nyland Acres (without the "e"), but over time the "e" was restored.


Oak Park
    Location: North of Agoura Hills

    Origin of name: Named for the oaks in the area.

    Oak Park is primarily a residential community in the eastern part of Ventura County near Thousand Oaks.     Origin of name: From an Indian word for reeds growing along the creek banks that were used for making baskets.


Point Mugu
    Location: Six miles southeast of Port Hueneme

    The inhabited area of Point Mugu consists of a Navy base. Mugu Lagoon, part of the base and overseen by the Navy, is an important wetlands area.

    Origin of name: Believed to be from a Chumash word, muwu, meaning beach. It would be the oldest recorded name in California history that's still in existence because it was mentioned by Cabrillo in 1542.
