In 1989 the last scene in the movie "Back to the Future Part III," was filmed in Port Hueneme at the Ventura Road railroad crossing (near Surfside Drive). Hueneme is pronounced "Why-ne-me" which is a Chumash Indian word meaning "resting place." The Indians traveled along the coast from Mugu Rock on the south or from Ventura on the north to Hueneme. They rested there before traveling to the Channel Islands. Thomas Bard laid out the City of Hueneme in 1872 and changed the name from Wynema to Hueneme. In 1874 a Lighthouse was established to guide shipping through the Santa Barbara Channel.
